Surf Hat’s cold-water surf rock meets Skinny Dyck’s easygoing alt-country for a night of Canadian indie songwriting. Surf Hat began as a joke between friends on a beach in Tofino. A few years later, the Squamish-based group has grown into one of B.C.’s standout emerging indie acts, crafting their own take on “cold-water surf rock”—music shaped by surf, psych, folk, and indie influences. Their latest album, Modern World Blues, continues that evolution while keeping the loose, unhurried spirit the band was built on. Opening the night is Skinny Dyck, the project of Lethbridge songwriter Ryan Dyck. Blending alt-country, cosmic country, and indie rock, his songs pair classic songwriting with pedal steel, spacious arrangements, and an easygoing style that moves comfortably between twang and something altogether its own. His latest release, Easygoing, expands on that approach without leaving its country roots behind. Together, Surf Hat and Skinny Dyck offer two distinct takes on modern Canadian songwriting—one rooted in shimmering West Coast indie, the other in expansive prairie country—sharing a bill that feels as natural as it does unexpected.
