Council approves West End housing for hospital patients, trainees
Kamloops council has approved bylaws allowing a Royal Inland Hospital Foundation property in the West End to be used for short- or long-term accommodation connected to Royal Inland Hospital.
The decision applies to 772 Battle Street West, a foundation-owned property that can now house out-of-town patients receiving treatment at the hospital and their family members or caregivers. It can also be used by medical practitioners and learners completing clinical rotations, locum work or similar placements at Royal Inland Hospital.
Council adopted Zoning Amendment Bylaw No. 55-120, 2026, and Housing Agreement Bylaw No. 64-13, 2026 on Aug. 11.
The zoning change permits up to 15 unrelated people to form one household at the site. The City report says the usual limit referenced for unrelated people is five.
Under the housing agreement, the use must be implemented on behalf of the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation and is limited to the property’s approved configuration.
According to the City’s July 14 report, the property includes a single-detached home and secondary suite. It has six bedrooms with individual dens and ensuites, along with three lower-level bedrooms designed to be converted into a separate suite if cooking facilities are installed.
The 1,976-square-metre property is beside Guerin Creek and has nine on-site parking stalls, plus room for two more vehicles in a stacked double garage, the report states.
The City describes the accommodation as a companion project to the Kamloops Cancer Centre, which was under construction as an extension of Royal Inland Hospital when the July report was prepared.
The City materials do not set out an opening date, rental rates, operating partner, eligibility process or expected number of users for the accommodation.
