__________
Construction has begun on a new commercial-vehicle inspection station on Highway 97 south of Prince George in fall 2026, restoring a critical commercial-vehicle-safety facility lost to fire and strengthening enforcement on a key northern freight corridor.
“Keeping unsafe commercial vehicles off the road is critical to protecting people and families who use our highways every day and to support the smooth movement of goods throughout northern B.C.,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Transportation and Transit. “The newly rebuilt Red Rock Inspection Station will restore a critical facility, provide modern infrastructure for enforcement officers and support the province’s economy and supply chains.”
The Province has awarded the construction contract, valued at $9.2 million, to northern B.C.-based contractor IDL Projects Inc. The project team will construct a new commercial-vehicle inspection building, replace the weigh scale building and complete associated site servicing, including civil and electrical infrastructure. The upgraded station will continue serving northbound and southbound commercial traffic travelling along the Highway 97 corridor.
Modern facility supports safety and enforcement
The new station will be built to modern security and safety standards, which will meet inspection requirements for the growing vehicle volumes along Highway 97. The weigh scale building will be replaced and a second building will be added to the station, expanding operational capacity to provide more space for inspections. It will help reduce the time commercial vehicles spend waiting for inspection and get drivers back on the road transporting the products they’re delivering sooner.
The project is part of the Province’s ongoing work to support a safe, reliable transportation network and efficient movement of people and goods throughout British Columbia. The Red Rock Inspection Station is a key location in the provincial Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) inspection network. It plays a crucial role in regulating private and commercial vehicles, contributing to overall road safety on highways in British Columbia.
Project completion is anticipated in December 2027.
Minimal effects for travellers
The project is expected to proceed without affecting Highway 97 traffic. No closures, single-lane-alternating traffic, reduced-speed zones or detours are anticipated. During construction, the site will be closed to traffic, although CVSE will maintain presence along the corridor.
Quick Facts:
- The Red Rock Inspection Station was destroyed by suspected arson in December 2024.
- Local CVSE officers have been reassigned to facilities in Prince George, Vanderhoof and Quesnel, and conduct mobile patrols and enforcement activities.
