Council Supports Kamloops Virtual Golf License Expansion
Kamloops council has supported a request from Kamloops Virtual Golf to expand its licensed area and increase its capacity at 141 Lorne St.
Council voted Aug. 11 to support changes to the business’s liquor-primary licence. The proposal would increase the licensed area from 153 square metres to 220 square metres and raise the maximum capacity from 30 people to 50.
The expansion would use vacant space in the unit next door. It would add another virtual golf bay and a lounge area, adding about 67 square metres to the business.
The location also puts Kamloops Virtual Golf within easy walking distance of Riverside Park and a growing number of recreation options in the area. The park includes lawn bowling, tennis and pickleball courts, along with the beach, water park, playground and walking paths. Virtual golf would add another activity to an area where people can already take part in several sports and recreational activities within walking distance of each other.
The change still needs approval from the BC Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch. City records reviewed by KamloopsCity.com do not show whether that approval has been granted.
Council’s support includes a condition that the business be limited to 50 people.
City staff said the location is suitable for a liquor-primary business because it is in a mixed-use commercial area. Staff also said the proposed capacity meets BC Building Code requirements.
Kamloops Virtual Golf must also continue to follow a good-neighbour agreement as part of its City business licence.
Before council made its decision, the City notified property owners and occupants within 100 metres of the business and invited public feedback. People could send written comments, join the meeting by Zoom or speak in person at the Aug. 11 council meeting.
The City report says the RCMP had no concerns about the proposed expansion. Staff also said they expected little impact from noise and believed the overall effect on the community would be positive.
Access and exit requirements for the expanded space were being handled through an active building permit and will have to meet the BC Building Code.
Kamloops Virtual Golf’s current liquor licence allows up to 30 people and expires March 31, 2027.
The final decision on the licence change rests with the BC Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch.
