Kamloops Community Band Plans Farewell Concert for Cliff Noakes
The Kamloops Community Band will hold a farewell concert for longtime music director Cliff Noakes on Wednesday, Nov. 18.
A Classic Concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Valleyview Secondary School Theatre, at 1950 Valleyview Dr. The band lists general-admission tickets at $15, available online and at the door.
The organization says the performance will be Noakes’s final concert as music director. In an Oct. 22 announcement, Noakes said he will hand music-director duties to Jaymi Daniels. The announcement does not state when Daniels’s appointment takes effect or whether she will conduct the Nov. 18 performance.
Daniels is listed by the Kamloops Music Collective as Valleyview Secondary’s music director and an associate director of the Kamloops Community Concert Band. The BC Music Educators’ Association also lists her as a member-at-large and conference co-chair on its board.
The community band’s official history says Dick Dickens founded the organization in 2001, following the earlier Canada Games band assembled for the 1993 Canada Summer Games in Kamloops. Noakes joined Dickens in conducting the band during its early years, according to the history, and took on the director role after Dickens died in 2009.
That history differs slightly from the band’s recent farewell announcement, which describes Noakes as a co-founder. The band’s official history identifies Dickens as its founder and does not expressly use the co-founder title for Noakes.
The band describes itself as a not-for-profit concert band for musicians from a range of ages and backgrounds. It says the Nov. 18 program will include selections associated with Benny Goodman, Frank Sinatra and Queen, along with wind-band works by Frank Ticheli and Gustav Holst.
More information and ticket details are available through the band’s event listing.
