Municipal Election - Kamloops Voter 1

Aberdeen

Aberdeen is a southern Kamloops neighbourhood set on the hills above the Thompson River valley. Its elevated location gives the area a distinct hillside setting, with residential streets extending across gently to steeply sloped terrain and views toward the city and surrounding valley. The neighbourhood’s name was officially adopted in 1977, and most of its urban development took place during the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
The area is primarily residential, with a mix of detached homes, townhouses, apartments, and newer subdivisions in its upper sections. Major roads such as Hugh Allan Drive, Pacific Way, Van Horne Drive, and Aberdeen Drive connect the neighbourhood with Sahali, Upper Sahali, Pineview, and other parts of the city. Commercial services are concentrated around Aberdeen Mall and the Highway 5A corridor, including restaurants, cafés, personal services, and larger retail and entertainment businesses.
Parks and open spaces are an important part of Aberdeen’s setting. Aberdeen Hills Park and Albert McGowan Park provide neighbourhood recreation areas, while West Highlands Park, Highland Park, Gordonhorn Park, and other smaller green spaces serve nearby residential areas. The neighbourhood also sits close to larger natural areas and trail networks, including Kenna Cartwright Nature Park, Peterson Creek Nature Park, and Sahali Terrace Nature Park. These connections give Aberdeen access to grassland, forested slopes, ravines, and walking routes beyond its developed streets.
Community facilities include Aberdeen Elementary, McGowan Park Elementary, the Hal Rogers Activity Centre, local churches, and a range of nearby schools and recreation services. The Aberdeen Area Plan identifies the neighbourhood as a relatively new part of Kamloops and provides planning direction for existing developed areas and remaining undeveloped land. Together, its hillside location, suburban residential pattern, commercial centre, schools, parks, and access to natural areas make Aberdeen an established community on Kamloops’s southern side.
