Dufferin/Southgate is a broad south-side area of Kamloops within the city’s Southwest Sector. It brings together the primarily residential Dufferin neighbourhood around Hillside Drive and Pacific Way with the commercial and industrial lands of Southgate farther south, near the Trans-Canada Highway. Because the two areas contain different types of development, the term is best understood as a local area grouping rather than a single neighbourhood with a clearly defined formal boundary.
Dufferin has a residential character shaped by established streets, Dufferin Elementary, local services, and its hillside setting near Mount Dufferin. Southgate has a more business-oriented landscape, with large-format retail, restaurants, automotive services, employment areas, and access to major roads. Together, the area provides a transition between Kamloops’s residential southern slopes, Thompson Rivers University and its surrounding recreation facilities, and the highway-oriented commercial areas along the city’s southern edge.
A defining feature of Dufferin/Southgate is its connection to Kenna Cartwright Nature Park. Trail access near Dufferin Elementary and Hillside Drive leads into one of Kamloops’s largest natural areas, with extensive hiking and cycling routes, open grassland, wetlands, and elevated views across the Thompson Valley, Kamloops Lake, and the Thompson River confluence. Dufferin Park provides an additional neighbourhood-scale natural space beside the park. The combination of homes, schools, businesses, recreational facilities, and extensive hillside parkland gives Dufferin/Southgate an important role in connecting everyday city services with Kamloops’s surrounding natural landscape.
