Green Party of Canada leadership candidate Nira Dookeran has withdrawn from the Party’s 2026 leadership race.

“For personal and family reasons, after much soul-searching, I have decided to withdraw from the Green Party of Canada Leadership Contest,” said Dookeran.

“I want to sincerely thank all the volunteers, donors, friends and supporters who came forward over the last 12 weeks to contribute to our campaign. It has been an inspiring, energizing, and humbling experience to work alongside so many talented, dedicated Greens for a cause we all share.”

“I want to express my best wishes to Mike Morrice, my fellow candidate in the Leadership Contest. We, as a Party, have a big job ahead of us. What I have learned over the last 12 years as an active member of the GPC, and seen especially up-close-and-personal in the last 12 weeks of campaigning, is how much talent, skill, experience, initiative, and dedication to the Green cause there is on the ground across the country.”

“I hope that, as a Party, we can strengthen our efforts to empower our members, who know their own people, communities, ridings, and regions most intimately. In this way, we can channel the tremendous energy of People Power on the ground to highlight the values, issues and priorities we all share in common—from protecting the planet and all our interconnected ecosystems to strengthening our democracy to leading a clean energy and economic transition. It’s effective collaboration and teamwork at all levels that will make this vision a reality.”

The Green Party of Canada thanks Nira for putting her name forward and for the time, energy and commitment she brought to the leadership race. The Party also thanks her campaign team, volunteers and supporters for their work throughout her candidacy.
