Canadians Deserve Answers About the Maple Fund and Your Brookfield Ties
Ottawa, ON – Today, Aaron Gunn, Conservative Shadow Minister for Ethics and Accountable Government, sent the following letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney calling on him to sell his Brookfield shares and options:
Prime Minister,
On Monday, Brookfield and CPP Investments announced a new financial relationship that ties the retirement savings of millions of Canadians to the investments of your former company.
Canadians know when Brookfield benefits, you benefit too.
They know that when you became Prime Minister, you kept your future shares, options and carried interest potentially worth tens of millions of dollars.
They know that while you were Chairman of Brookfield and the Liberals’ economic advisor, Brookfield asked for $10 billion in funds from taxpayers and wanted to make Canadians’ pensions pay you as well.
They know that Brookfield has direct access to you as Prime Minister, including when Brookfield subsidiary Northriver Midstream lobbied you in April 2025 and when you met with Brookfield’s Infrastructure CEO Sam Pollack in May 2025. A Brookfield executive, Justin Beber, met with you in your office in October 2025.
Brookfield’s COO confirmed before a Parliamentary committee that placing stock options and share units in a blind trust does not change the reality that their value rises when Brookfield’s value rises. In other words, when Brookfield gets paid you get paid.
So why should Canadians trust that this new partnership is being carried out solely in their interests?
How can they be confident that your decisions cannot increase the value of assets, funds or investments from which you may benefit financially?
And if they cannot, what safeguards prevent that from happening?
You told Canadians to trust your ethics screen, which prevents you from participating in decisions that could further your own interests or Brookfield’s interests.
But why should Canadians simply take it on faith that the safeguards are working?
After all, your ethics screen once failed to include 95% of Brookfield owned and operated companies.
This meant 1,900 missing companies that could personally enrich you if they perform well.
Even Mr. Sabia, responsible for your ethics screen, made it clear that he couldn’t manage your conflicts of interests without selling his Brookfield assets. Yet as the Prime Minister, you are keeping your Brookfield assets despite being able to make decisions affecting Brookfield’s profits.
Canadians deserve transparency.
They deserve to know if you are putting personal profits ahead of the national interest.
Brookfield’s COO confirmed that you could have liquidated your Brookfield assets, including stock options and deferred shares.
You chose not to.
The solution is simple.
Sell them all.
