Thompson Rivers University
Thompson Rivers University (TRU) is a public, dual-sector research university based at 900 McGill Road in Kamloops. Founded in 1970 as Cariboo College and granted full university status in 2005, TRU now serves more than 25,000 students through its Kamloops and Williams Lake campuses and its Open Learning division. The university offers more than 140 on-campus programs, along with flexible online and distance-learning options ranging from university preparation and trades training to certificates, diplomas, undergraduate degrees, graduate programs and the Juris Doctor law degree.
The Kamloops campus is a substantial educational and community destination in the centre of the city. Its academic, technical and student facilities include the Brown Family House of Learning, libraries and learning commons, science and health buildings, trades and technology spaces, residences, food services, the Campus Activity Centre and the Tournament Capital Centre. TRU also supports hands-on learning through practicums, co-operative education, field schools, study abroad, undergraduate research and community-based projects.
The campus is set across approximately 90 hectares of developed buildings and grounds, with additional undeveloped land, landscaped areas, gardens, meadows, woodland and trails. Publicly accessible outdoor spaces include the Campus Commons and other green areas that connect the university’s academic, cultural and natural features. The campus also includes venues such as the House of Learning’s in-the-round lecture theatre and spaces used for lectures, conferences, performances and community events.
TRU is located on the traditional and unceded territory of the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc within Secwépemcúl’ecw. Indigenous learning and community are reflected throughout the campus, including Cplul’kw’ten, or The Gathering Place, which provides cultural connection and support for Indigenous students. The university combines academic and applied education with research focused on regional and real-world issues, including wildfire, sustainability, health, Indigenous community wellness and other areas of importance to British Columbia’s Interior. Student life includes the TRU WolfPack varsity program, recreational sports, clubs, campus events and a diverse community of learners from Kamloops, across Canada and around the world.
